Spring 2 Week 6

English

This week, we have finished writing a letter to a head teacher in Italy, trying to persuade him to bring children to visit Brighton. We have published our letters using our careful, joined handwriting.

Maths

This week, we have making connections between our 2, 4 and 8 times table, using doubling and halving to solve problems. We also recapped some learning about telling the time from Year 2.

Spring 2 Week 5

English

This week, we have continue to develop our persuasive skills. We have planned and started to write a letter to a head teacher in Italy, trying to persuade him to bring children to visit Brighton.

We have been learning some Islamic stories in RE including ‘The Prophet and the Ants’ and ‘The Crying Camel’ which give a message about looking after all creatures. We made posters to encourage people to take care of animals.

Spring 2 Week 4

English

This week, we have been learning reading persuasive letters and starting to identify their key features such as imperative verbs and emotive language.

Maths

This week, we have making connections between our 2 and 4 times table, using doubling and halving to solve problems.

In assembly and in class, we discussed neuro-diversity and how our brains work differently. We talked about how we celebrate difference and value the skills that everyone has in our school. On Friday, lots of us wore odd socks to reflect that celebration.

Spring 2 Week 3

English

This week, we have enjoyed writing and publishing our own version of 'The Three Little Pigs'. You could ask your child whose perspective they wrote the story from and how they made the story their own.

Maths

This week, we have been learning to make links between the 2, 4 and 8 times tables as well as completing some assessments. You could practise these times tables and related division facts with your child or encourage them to log-in to TTRS.

We had a great Science week including visitors talking about their jobs linked to Science (special thanks to the grandparent who shared his work with us on Friday morning!). We carried out some investigations with ice as well as thinking about jobs we might like to do in the future.

Spring 2 Week 2

English

This week, we have been learning all about writing skills to help us write our own version of the Three Little Pigs. We have been using apostrophes in contractions (we are – we’re) and possessive apostrophes too.

Maths

This week, we have been using column addition with regrouping in both the ones and the tens column.

Spring 1 Week 6

English

This week, we have been very busy! We have now written our Stonehenge non-chronological reports and our families are coming to see them on Friday along with our hillfort models!

Maths

This week, we have been taking a closer look at multistep word problems and how to reorder an equation to help us work it out most efficiently.

Spring 1 Week 5

English

This week, have started a new topic. We are learning about non-chronological reports and our subject is Stonehenge. As a stunning start we built Stonehenge from biscuits, to help us remember the shape and the names of some of the important stones.

Maths

This week, we have been practicing how to subtract using the methods of partitioning and finding the difference.

Spring 1, Week 4

English

This week, we have written our own Stone Age story with a new character and a new adventure. We will be publishing a little book each to share with our buddy class!

Maths

This week, we have been practicing how to add using two methods: partitioning and adjusting.

In science we have been learning about light and the dangers and benefits of the sun. We made some play sun-glasses and wrote some facts on how to keep safe in the sun.

Spring 1, Week 3

English

This week, we have been revising direct speech and we have begun creating a new Stone Age character who will appear in our own version of the story which we will write next week.

Maths

This week, we have been investigating right angles in quadrilaterals and triangles. We have been noticing how right angles can form around a point when you put certain shapes together.

Spring 1, Week 2

English

This week, we have been revising conjunctions. We finished reading Stone Age Boy and we wrote explanations about parts of the story using conjunctions. We made a story mountain to remember the details of the plot, ready to innovate and write our own changed version.

Maths

This week, we have been learning about angles, right angles, triangles and quadrilaterals. We have been using dotty paper to draw various shapes and angles and we made a right-angle finder using split-pins. We looked for objects with right-angles in the classroom.

Spring 1, Week 1

English

This week, we have started an exciting new book called Stone Age Boy which fits with our history topic. We learned about the jobs that went on at a Stone Age camp and we went outside to imagine what it might be like to be a hunter gatherer. We used our senses to write descriptions about what we could see, hear, smell and so on.

Maths

This week, we have been learning about mass. We used scales to weigh various objects and we have been reading scales with a range of different intervals. It can be quite tricky for children to understand how to work our the intervals on scales, so spend some time on this at home if you can.

Autumn 2, Weeks 6 & 7

English

We have finished our unit on Narrative writing, where we focused on the retelling, and then the innovating of, a traditional African tale. We used the story of ‘Fly Eagle Fly’; which can be found at the following:

We continued our unit in Computing, ‘We Are Programmers’, where we have been aiming to create our own animations, by designing a character, making it move and using speech bubbles. We are using a coding program aimed at school children called ‘Scratch’, which you can access online at: https://scratch.mit.edu/. The children actually have their own login details for Scratch now, so they might be able to remember them, and continue their projects at home. We have focused on two characters having a conversation.

By the end of this week, the children have been able to create an animation using the following criteria (or Steps-To-Success):

Encourage your children to demonstrate their animations at home by logging in with their Scratch Logins (ask their teacher if they cannot remember their login details).

Autumn 2, Week 4

English

We are Poets! We finished our own versions of the poem by Roger McGough, called ‘The Sound Collector’. You can find the original here- Roger McGough reads 'The Sound Collector'.

We each had to write our own Stanzas, using sounds that we have ‘collected’ together from walking around the school grounds. We have started to practise our own stanzas, or in pairs, to PERFORM TO PARENTS AND CARERS on the afternoon of Tuesday 10th December 2024!

Maths

This week, we have left measurements and gone back to learning how to represent 3- digit numbers, using various methods. The following shows 3-digit numbers represented in Place Value Charts and with Dienes, both physical representations of 3-digit numbers. There were quite a few misconceptions about how 3- digit numbers are composed across the year group.

Computing

We continued our unit in Computing, ‘We Are Programmers’, where we are aiming to create our own animations, by designing a character, making it move and using speech bubbles. We are using a coding program aimed at school children called ‘Scratch’, which you can access online at: https://scratch.mit.edu/. The children actually have their own login details for Scratch now, so they might be able to remember them, and continue their projects at home. We have focused on two characters having a conversation.

Art- Textiles and SEWING!

Another BIG week in the world of Sewing! With the help of several parents, the children used their skills at both Running Stitch and Cross Stitches to DESIGN and actually start to sew their designs on ‘Binca’ material. We have some incredible works of textiles on the way!

Autumn 2, Week 3

English

We are Poets! We started looking at rhyme in English, and focusing on the poem by Roger McGough, called ‘The Sound Collector’. You can find it here- Roger McGough reads 'The Sound Collector'.

We have learnt about Stanzas, Rhyme and been on a sound walk, ‘collecting’ sounds from around the school environment. For example, ‘the roaring of the hand- dryer’ and ‘the stamping of the shoes’.

This week, we have been continuing to learn how to convert measurements between centimetres and millimetres, as well as estimating the length of objects in centimetres and millimetres.

Autumn 2, Week 2

English

This week, we developed our own narrative based on our core text, ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. You can access an online version of this story at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRAAQ8EWzig

We have rehearsed all of the key writing skills for this unit and composed our own alternative adventure for the two protagonists of the story. The skills we have been using are:

· using ‘Inverted Commas’, or Speech Marks

· writing in the past tense

· using interesting Expanded Noun Phrases (like the ‘old, wooden rowing boat’, or ‘over the tempestuous, stormy waves’

Maths

This week, we have been learning how to convert measurements between centimetres and metres. For example, we have been able to explain how and why 1m and 54cm is the same as 154cm, or conversely how and why 284cm is the same as 2m and 84 cm.

Computing

We have started our new unit in Computing, ‘We Are Programmers’, where we are aiming to create our own animations, by designing a character, making it move and using speech bubbles. We are using a coding program aimed at school children called ‘Scratch’, which you can access online at: https://scratch.mit.edu/. Science

For our learning about Forces, the children had a very active learning lesson, where they demonstrated and proved that some forces need contact between 2 objects, but MAGNETIC forces can act at a distance. They did this using paper clips, paper and magnets, as evidenced in the following pictures:

Art- Textiles and SEWING!

A BIG week in ART! The children learnt how to ‘thread a thread’ through the eye of a needle! They were able to do this with our child friendly needles and also to subsequently tie a knot in the material. This was a bit trickier, but it was surprising how many children were able to do this almost first time, as the following pictures will evidence!

Autumn 2, Week 1

English

This week, we have started to develop our writing skills around a new core text, ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. You can access an online version of this story at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRAAQ8EWzig

We have used this text to learn how to use ‘Inverted Commas’ (Speech Marks), focusing on how to correctly use them in simple sentences, along with the correct grammar. We have also focused on the correct usage of the Past Tense in sentences.

This week, we have been learning how to bridge 100 when adding or subtracting a 2-digit number which is also a multiple of 10. The methods used are outlined in the images below:

Science

This week we started our new Science unit, investigating FORCES. The children learnt, through practical experiments, that friction is a force that slows things down. English

This week, we have completed our unit on Bones and Muscles and the children have produced the most wonderful information leaflets!

After half term, we will be looking at a book called Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. The children will be adding their own speech to the text.

Maths

This week, we have been learning how to bridge 100 when adding a single digit number to a 2-digit number.

For example 96 + 7 (Partition the 7 to make 100)

96 + 4 = 100.

100 + 3 = 103

After half term we will be consolidating some ‘bridging to 100’ learning and then moving on to measure using a metre stick.

Autumn 1, Week 7

English

This week, we have started a non-fiction unit on Bones and Muscles. The children are learning how to take notes to then produce their own leaflet. The week after we will be producing our own leaflet – the children are really looking forward to it!

This week, we have been learning how to partition a 2-digit number to help us make 100 before adding the rest of the number e.g. 70 + 50 partitioned to 70 + 30 = 100 + 20 = 100.

This week, we have continued to read a story called The Secret of Black Rock by Joe Todd Stanton. The children have written their own versions of the story and published them – they’re wonderful!

Next week we will be moving on to a non-fiction texts, linked to our science learning about Bones and Muscles.

This week, we have been learning about ways to make 100 using complements to 100 such as 93 + 7 and 26 + 74. We have been applying this knowledge to word problems and the children have created their own too.

Next week we will be looking at partitioning a 2 digit number to help us make 100 before adding the rest of the number e.g. 70 + 50 partitioned to 70 + 30 = 100 + 20 = 100.

This week, we have started a new story called The Secret of Black Rock by Joe Todd Stanton. The children have been writing sentences using time adverbials, expanded noun phrases and conjunctions. Next week, the children will write their own adventure stories, following the same pattern as Black Rock.

This week, we have been learning about ways to make 100 using complements to 100 such as 93 + 7 and 26 + 74. We discussed the misconception that is often made where the children make 110 instead of 100. Next week, we will continue with this skill to identify any errors and consolidate the children’s understanding.

This week, we have continued reading a story called Meerkat Mail. The children have written their own postcard which included time adverbials and conjunctions. Next week we are moving on to a text called Black Rock by Joe Todd-Stanton. The children will learn how to use inverted commas (speech marks).

This week, we have been learning about ways to make 100 (10 x 10, 4 x 25, 5 x 20) and next week we will be moving on to complements to 100 such as 46 + 54, making 10 with the ones digit (6 + 4).

This week, we have been reading a story called Meerkat Mail. We have been learning about the differences between postcards and letters.

This week, we have been reading a poem called ‘All The Ways to be Smart’ and the children have been writing sentences about how they are smart in their own special way.

This week, we have written informal letters to the current Year 2 children, to let them know about all of the amazing things they’ll be doing in Year 3!

We have come to the end of our Active Planet topic! Our task was to create a range of earthquake proof buildings using marshmallows and cocktail sticks. Some of the structures survived three powerful earthquakes.

This week, we have been consolidating our knowledge of parallel and perpendicular lines and identifying where they are in the outside world.

This week, we have continued building on our story writing skills using the book ‘The Promise’ and the children have been creating their own settings and characters using descriptive and powerful language.

This week, we have been building on our knowledge of fractions. We have learning how to use repeated addition of a unit fraction to make a non-unit fraction. The children have also learnt how to place fractions on a number line.

This week, we have started reading a book called ‘The Promise’ by Nicola Davies. It’s a wonderful book about somebody keeping a promise and changing the world to make it a better place.

This week, we have been learning about non unit fractions. The children have been learning about the difference between unit and non-unit fractions and identifying them.

Summer 1, Week 6

This week, we have completed our newspaper articles and published them on to large A3 tea-stained paper. They look incredible!

Maths

This week, we have been learning about number fact relationships between multiplication and division. The children have discovered that if you know that 8 x 3 = 24 then you also know that 3 x 8 = 24, 24 ÷ 3 = 8 and 24 ÷8 =3.

This week, we have continued with our unit on Journalistic Writing. We have been consolidating our journalism skills such as writing in past tense, paragraphs and the 5 Ws (Who, Where, When, Why and HoW)

Maths

This week, we have been learning about unit fractions and then applying this knowledge to answer a variety of different word problems. We have also started to find fractions of amounts.

We designed and created our fantastic Islamic prayer mats for the Community Art show. The children applied all their knowledge of paint mixing to create these beautiful designs.

Summer 1, Week 4

English

This week, we started a new unit on Journalistic Writing. We learnt about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii. The children have been learning skills to help them write a newspaper report about the big event.

Maths

This week, we have been learning about fractions of a whole and the relationships between the parts and the denominator.

We learnt about fraction walls and constructed our own to help scaffold our thinking.

This week, we are finishing off our biographies about Boudicca and recording ourselves read out our biographies.

Maths

This week, we have been learning how to construct wholes after being given the number of parts. We have learnt how to write a fraction in the correct way.

This week, the children have continued with their unit on biographies and have been learning all of the skills they need to write their own biography about Boudicca.

This week, we have been learning about numerators and denominators and identifying parts of a whole.

This week, the children have started a new unit on biographies. We have read several examples of biographies and identified features.

This week, we have been learning about to solve subtraction calculations using the column method. We have been using the terms: - subtrahend, minuend, difference and exchanging.

This week, the children have started a new unit on Persuasive writing. The children are going to be writing a letter to a school in Italy to convince them to come to Brighton for their summer holiday.

This week, we have continued with our unit on the 2x, 4x and 8x table. This week we have focused on the 4x table.

We had to classify a range of different cubes! Thank you to some of our wonderful parents who have run workshops with us and talked about their careers in STEM.

English: This week, the children have been writing their own versions of “The Little Pigs” written from the first little pig’s point of you.

Maths: This week, we started a unit on the 2x, 4x and 8x table. This week we have recapped the 2x table and started to look at the 4x table.

English: This week, the children have been rehearsing their writing skills, using contractions, conjunctions, inverted commas and past tense. The writing has been brilliant!

Maths: This week, we have been continuing with our learning on how to complete addition sums using the column addition – we have introduced terms such as regrouping.

This week, the children have started a new unit based on the story of the Three Little Pigs. They have been learning about alternative versions of traditional tales. The children heard a version told from the point of view of the wolf.

This week, we have been learning how to complete addition sums using the column addition – the children have been brilliant at it and have shown such excellent number sense and confidence!

Our new topic is called ‘An Italian Adventure’ and we can’t wait to learn all about Italy!

This week, the children have been creating their amazing Non-chronological reports about Stonehenge. We are so proud of them and all of their hard work this term so far – they have shown such a wonderful attitude towards their writing!

This week, we have been consolidating all of the different skills we have learnt over the first half of the summer term.

Art

We have been creating our own cave painting art by using our understanding of proportion.

We had a great trip to Brighton Museum this week where the children took part in a workshop with a member of the museum team. The children loved hunting for clues and finding out more about local findings.

This week, we have started a new unit on Non-chronological texts. We have been looking at lots of different types to help us identify the features. The children will be producing their own reports about Stonehenge.

Maths:

This week, we have been learning how to identify the most efficient method when completing word problems using addition and subtraction.

This week, we have completed our own adventure stories using the story ‘Stone Age Boy.’ The children have written the most wonderful stories and we can’t wait to share them with you!

This week, we have continued writing using our story ‘Stone Age Boy’ and the children have been planning their own versions.

This week, we have moved on to looking at mass. The children have had a go and reading different scales and answering word problems

Spring 1, Week 2

English: This week we have used our skills to write a descriptive piece of writing about the Earth. We have spent lots of time looking at all the brilliant things we can do on the Earth, whilst listening to ‘What a Wonderful World’ by Louis Armstrong to help us with this.

Maths: This week we have started learning our x5 and x10 times tables. The children worked really when making their own posters all about the x10 times tables. We then spent lots of time looking at the x5 times tables and at how multiplication is communitive.

Geography: In Geography, we had a special visit from Paula who works for British Airways. She came to our classes to talk about her experience as working as cabin crew, whilst sharing all her experiences about flying to the 7 continents. The children asked lots of interesting questions about her job.

English: This week, we have continued writing with conjunctions using our text ‘The Stone Age Boy’ and the children are working towards writing their own version of the story.

Maths: This week, we have been identifying features of shapes such as vertices, right angles and diagonals.

Autumn 2, Week 7

English: This week, we have started our new unit using the text ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura. We have fully immersed ourselves in the text by predicting what will happen, using the images in the text to understand the story and carried out some outdoor learning for a drama activity.

Maths: This week, we have been learning about right angles and have made our own angle checkers. We have used images and shapes to identify right angles.

Autumn 2, Week 6

English:

This week, we finished our writing unit based on Fly Eagle Fly. The children thought about what would happen next and then wrote their own continuation using the writing skills we have learnt.

This week, we have been learning about place value. We have looked at how to partition numbers in a flexible way. We have also learnt how to count in 50s and how counting in 5s can help us with that.

Autumn 2, Week 5

English:

This week, we have started a brand-new story writing unit based on the traditional African tale of Fly Eagle Fly. The children have read the book and created some fantastic pictures based on the different settings of the story.

Maths:

This week, we have been learning about place value. We have been learning how to partition numbers in different ways and we have been using the terms addends in our answers. We have finished the week looking at 100 more and less and 10 more and less from a given number.

Autumn 2, Week 4

English:

This week, we continued studying The Sound Collector by Roger McGough. We went on a walk around the school and then we created our own Sound Collector poems following the same rhyming pattern. We then performed the poems to our buddy classes.

Maths:

This week, we have been learning about place value. The children have created 3-digit numbers using dienes and place value counters. We have then showed our understanding of place value in a variety of different ways.

Autumn 2, Week 3

English:

This week, we have started a new unit on poetry. The children have been studying a poem by Roger McGough called “The Sound Collector.” The children have learnt about the verbs and nouns that the poet used and then they went on a sound walk around school.

Maths:

This week, we have been learning how to convert cm and mm into mms. We have learnt about mm’s are 10x smaller. We have used our rulers accurately to measure a range of things around the classroom.

Autumn 1, Week 7

English:

This week, we have been reading a book called Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. The children have enjoyed retelling the story using their own actions. We have learnt how to use speech marks and then added our own speech into the story.

Maths:

This week, we have been learning how to add and subtract multiples of 10 from two- and three-digit numbers. We have learnt how to use a range of jottings to show our understanding.

Autumn 1, Week 6

English:

This week, we have become scientific writers. We have been researching bones and muscles and using the information we have found to create notes ready to create and publish our leaflets next week.

Maths:

This week, we have been learning about addition and subtraction. We have been learning to use a range of jottings to help us with calculations that go over 100.0

The children have been on a fantastic trip up the I360 this week to learn about the different land uses of Brighton and all the famous tourist attractions.

Autumn 1, Week 5

English: This week, we have continued reading the book, “The Secret of Black Rock” we have then used retold the story in our own words using the skills we have looked at during the unit.

Maths: This week, we have been learning about numbers past 100. We have created numbers in lots of different ways using a wide range of resources.

English: This week, we have been reading the book, “The Secret of Black Rock” we have used this book to write some amazing descriptive sentences using time adverbials, powerful verbs and noun phrases. We finished the week learning how to write speech,

Maths: This week, we have been learning our multiples of 10 number bonds to 100 and then using this knowledge to learn the complements to 100.

Photos: The children have been learning how to hold a knife safely and then use the bridge and claw grips. They then used these skills to practise on different things.

English: This week, we have written in role as Sunny the meerkat. We wrote postcards home about what we had seen on our journey.

Maths: This week, we have been learning about number bonds to 10 and then we have then learnt about different ways we can split 100.0

English: This week, we have been learning about expanded noun phrases and then using this knowledge to write some fantastic descriptive sentences about the desert where Sunny the Meerkat lives.

Maths: This week, we have been learning two new methods of subtraction.

English: This week, we have been reading a book called All the Ways to be Smart. The children have been learning about what makes a sentence and then we wrote about the ways we are smart.
